Hreflang Manager
Hreflang tags for every market and language on your Shopify store, and an audit that shows which ones are broken.
Install from the Shopify App Store
What it does
Hreflang tags tell search engines which version of a page is meant for which language and region. On a store with several markets or languages, they are easy to get wrong: a translated URL handle turns an alternate into a redirect, a product that isn't sold in one market still gets linked there, and market subfolders or domains get left out.
- Reads your markets, languages and their URLs (subfolders or domains) from Shopify.
- Uses each language's translated URL handle, so alternates point at the real page, not a redirect.
- Leaves out markets where a product isn't sold.
- Adds the tags through a theme app embed. No theme code to edit or undo.
- Audits your live storefront against Google's hreflang guidelines: self-reference, return links, full URLs, valid language and region codes, x-default, canonicals, and alternates that redirect or return 404.
It won't promise you better rankings. It makes sure search engines are told the right thing about your pages, and shows you that it's working.
Want to see where your store stands first? The free hreflang checker reads the tags on any page of your store, with nothing to install.
How setup works
- Install the app from the Shopify App Store and approve its read-only permissions.
- Turn on the Hreflang Manager app embed. The app's Enable app embed button opens the right place in your theme editor.
- On the paid plan, turn off Shopify's own Automatic hreflang tags in Online Store > Preferences, so pages don't carry two sets. On the free plan the app adds no tags, so keep Shopify's on and let the audit check them. More in Shopify's automatic hreflang tags: keep them or turn them off.
- Check the market map in the app, then run the audit.
The app's setup checklist confirms each step by reading your storefront the way a visitor does. If your store still has a password, you can save it in the app so the checks can see your pages. Step-by-step help and answers to common questions are on the support page, and how the app works in detail is in the documentation.
Pricing
A free plan runs the audit. A paid plan manages the tags for your store. Current prices are shown on the Shopify App Store listing.
Privacy
The app keeps what it needs to work: your store's domain and access token, the alternate URLs it works out, your audit results, and your storefront password only if you choose to save it (encrypted). Nothing about your customers. Read the privacy policy.
