Setup

  1. Install the app and approve the permissions. They are all read-only: markets, languages, translations, products, content and publications.
  2. Turn on the app embed. In the app, click Enable app embed: it opens the theme editor with the embed selected, so you only need to click Save. Or go to Online Store > Themes > Customize > App embeds, switch on Hreflang Manager, and click Save.
  3. Turn off Shopify's automatic hreflang tags (Pro plan only). In the app, click Open Preferences, or go to Online Store > Preferences, find Automatic hreflang tags in the social sharing image and SEO section, turn it off, and save. Changes can take a few minutes to appear on your storefront. On the Free plan, leave Shopify's tags on: the app adds its tags only on Pro.
  4. Check your market map. The app's Market map section lists each market, its languages and the URL used for each. If something is missing, make sure the market is active and the language is published in Settings > Markets and Settings > Languages, then refresh the map.
  5. Run the audit. Fix anything it reports, then run it again.

The setup checklist confirms steps 1 and 2 by reading your storefront home page the way a visitor does.

Plans

Free: the market map, the setup checklist and the audit, run whenever you like. Pro adds the hreflang tags on your storefront and an automatic weekly audit, with a 14-day free trial. Development stores get Pro at no charge. On Free the app adds no hreflang tags, so keep Shopify's automatic hreflang tags turned on. Current prices are on the Shopify App Store listing.

Common questions

Will this improve my search rankings?

We can't promise that. Hreflang tells search engines which version of a page to show to which language and region. Getting it right helps them show the right page; it isn't a ranking boost.

Do I need to edit my theme?

No. The tags come from a theme app embed. Switching the embed off removes them.

Why turn off Shopify's automatic hreflang tags?

With both on, every page would carry two sets of hreflang tags that may disagree. Shopify's own setting says to turn it off when an app adds the tags instead.

Which pages get tags?

Every storefront page, in every published language of every active market, except pages that shouldn't be in search: the 404 page, search results, the cart, the password page, gift cards and customer account pages.

How soon do changes show up?

Changes to products and collections are picked up within minutes. Changes to pages, blogs, blog posts and translations, and to markets and languages, are picked up by the daily sync, or straight away when you click Refresh in the app.

What does the audit check?

A sample of up to 60 of your live pages: the home page of every market and language, then every language and market version of a few products, collections, pages and blog posts. It respects your robots.txt. Run it whenever you like; on Pro it also runs every week. The documentation explains each finding.

I use a translation app. Will they conflict?

Some translation apps add their own hreflang tags. If yours does, turn that feature off so there's only one set. The audit flags duplicate tags.

Does it work with market subfolders and separate domains?

Yes. The app reads each market's subfolder or domain from Shopify and uses those URLs.

My store still has a password. Can I use the app?

Yes. Save your storefront password in the app's Storefront password section, and the setup check and the audit will open your store the way a visitor does. It's stored encrypted, and you can remove it at any time. Or remove the password in Online Store > Preferences.

Does it link separate Shopify stores?

Not yet. This version covers one store and its markets.

What happens if I uninstall?

The tags stop. Turn Shopify's Automatic hreflang tags back on in Online Store > Preferences so your store still has hreflang. We delete your store's data from our systems.

What data does the app keep?

Your store's domain and the access token Shopify issues at install, the alternate URLs the app works out, your audit results, and your storefront password if you choose to save it (encrypted). Nothing about your customers. See the privacy policy.
