Index Check
Search Console, explained for Shopify: which of your pages Google isn't indexing and why, which of those are harmless, and fixes for the ones that aren't.
What it does
Search Console's Page indexing report lists URLs under reasons like “Alternate page with proper canonical tag” or “Crawled – currently not indexed”. On a Shopify store most of them are filtered, sorted and variant views of your real pages, and leaving them out of Google is what you want. A few are real problems. Index Check tells them apart.
- Scans your storefront the way Google sees it: reads your robots.txt and sitemap, then checks an example of each kind of Shopify URL (products, collections, filtered and sorted views, tag, vendor, type and search pages, variant and tracking links) and says whether each is fine, harmless or a problem, and why.
- Explains a Search Console export. Download a reason's list from Search Console and upload it. Every URL is sorted by the kind of Shopify page it is, with what to do about it. The file isn't stored.
- Fixes what an app can fix. Noindex rules for tag, vendor, type, search, filtered and sorted views, offered only where the scan found a problem, added through a theme app embed. Hide chosen products, collections, pages or blog posts from search, with undo.
- Connects to Search Console (optional, read-only) to check how Google indexes a sample of your pages each week, so you can see the fixes take effect.
It won't promise you better rankings. It shows you what Google is doing with your pages, and fixes the parts a Shopify app can fix.
Guides: “Crawled - currently not indexed” on Shopify, “Alternate page with proper canonical tag” on Shopify and Shopify tag, vendor and type pages in Google.
Why it asks for Google access
Connecting Search Console is optional: the scan and the export explainer work without it. If you connect, Index Check asks Google for read-only access to your Search Console data (webmasters.readonly). It uses that access only to read whether Google has indexed your store's URLs and why (URL Inspection and the list of pages in Search Analytics, for your store's property), and shows the result in the app. It can't change anything in your Search Console account, and you can disconnect at any time.
Pricing
The scan and the export explainer are free. A paid plan adds the noindex rules, hiding pages from search, and the Search Console connection with its weekly check. Current prices are shown on the Shopify App Store listing.
Privacy
Index Check keeps what it needs to work: your store's domain and access token, your scan results, the items you hid from search, and, if you connect Search Console, an encrypted Google token and the indexing results for your sampled pages. Nothing about your customers. Read the privacy policy.
Support
Setup steps and common questions are on the support page, and how the app works in detail is in the documentation. Email hello@goodkeel.com. A person reads every message.
