Email hello@goodkeel.com with your store's .myshopify.com address and what you're seeing. We usually reply within one business day.
Setup
- Install the app and approve the permissions. It reads products and content to know your store's URLs, and writes to products and content only to hide the items you choose from search.
- Scan your storefront. Click Scan storefront. It takes a minute or two. If your storefront has a password, save it under Storefront password first.
- Turn on the app embed (for noindex rules). Click open App embeds: it opens the theme editor at App embeds. Switch on Index Check and click Save. Scan again: the scan confirms the embed is on.
- Turn on the rules you want under Fix: noindex rules, then scan again to see them working.
- Connect Search Console (optional). Click Connect Search Console, sign in with Google, choose your store's property, and click Check now.
Noindex rules, hiding pages from search and the Search Console connection are part of the paid plan. The scan and the export explainer are free.
Common questions
Will this improve my search rankings?
We can't promise that, and nobody honestly can. Index Check shows what Google does with your pages and fixes the parts an app can fix. Keeping duplicate views out of the index helps Google spend its time on your real pages; it isn't a ranking boost.
Most of my "not indexed" pages are filtered or sorted URLs. Is that bad?
Usually not. Those are copies of your collections, and Google leaving them out is the result you want. Index Check marks them harmless. It flags the cases that need a look: real products, collections and pages that aren't indexed, and views Google can still index that point to themselves as the main version.
How do I explain a Search Console export?
In Search Console, open Indexing > Pages, click a reason under "Why pages aren't indexed", then Export > Download CSV. Upload the zip in the app's Explain a Search Console export section. Every URL is sorted by the kind of Shopify page it is, with what to do about it. The file isn't stored.
Do I need to edit my theme?
No. Noindex rules work through a theme app embed that you switch on once in the theme editor. Turning a rule off removes its tag.
Why doesn't Index Check offer a rule for every kind of page?
Rules are offered only where the latest scan found a problem the app can fix. If a page already points Google to the main version with its canonical tag, adding noindex on top can send mixed signals, so the app doesn't offer it. There's no rule for collection page 2 and up: Google recommends each page keeps its own canonical.
What does "Hide from search" do?
It sets Shopify's own seo.hidden setting on the products, collections, pages or blog posts you choose. That adds noindex and removes them from your sitemap and from your store's search. Visitors can still open them. Index Check only unhides what it hid.
Why does it ask for access to my Google account?
Only if you choose to connect Search Console. Access is read-only: the app reads whether Google has indexed a sample of your store's URLs and why. It can't change anything in Search Console, and Disconnect removes its access at Google. See how Index Check uses Google data.
My store still has a password. Can I use the app?
Yes. Save your storefront password in the app and the scan opens your store the way a visitor does. It's stored encrypted, and you can remove it at any time. Or remove the password in Online Store > Preferences.
What happens if I move to the free plan?
Your noindex rules are kept but stop applying, and weekly Search Console checks stop. You can still turn rules off, unhide pages and disconnect Google.
What happens if I uninstall?
The app embed and its noindex tags go with the app. Pages you hid stay hidden, because the setting is on your own products and pages: unhide them in the app first if you want them back in search. We delete your store's data, and revoke and delete any Search Console connection.
What data does the app keep?
Your store's domain and access token, scan results, what you hid through the app, your storefront password if you save it (encrypted), and, if you connect Search Console, an encrypted Google token and the results for your sampled pages. Nothing about your customers. See the privacy policy.
